Software & Application Miscellaneous: Installing only Norton Antivirus in NSW2008

210| Mon, 03 Mar 2008 18:36:00 GMT| kvoliver23| Comments (8)
I have Norton SystemWorks 2006 on my computer. I just purchased NSW 2008 (free with all the rebates) in order to get "free" subscription renewal for the Norton antivirus (trying to save $$ where I can).

So I thought I would just go ahead install the entire NSW 2008, when to my horror, it began uninstalling Norton GoBack (from NSW 2006). I use Norton GoBack a lot and wanted to keep it. I had read on user forums the other day that Norton GoBack was incompatible with computers with RAID - I have RAID 1 and Norton GoBack has worked just fine on my computer. Sooo, I decided to try and just install the Norton Antivirus from the NSW 2008 CD. But it also started to uninstall NSW2006 (with my beloved Norton GoBack) so I aborted. Now I can't figure out how to just install the antivirus (even though the CD for NSW2008 has a choice for just installing the antivirus). Help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Thanks and I had already gone to customer support webpages. I know how to uninstall components but when I go to install just the antivirus, NSW08 "sees" my NSW2006 and begins uninstalling (including my GoBack which I don't want to uninstall). I would appreciate any other ideas you may have too!

What version of NSW 2008. Basic??
I believe Standard has goback available to install.
I updated from NSW2006 to NSW2008 thru free downloads. It says free for 2007 but also will upgrade 2006.
I think I saw GoBack as an option to install. I have standard version. Not Premium.
Bought NAV2008 and will use product code to get new subscription without actually installing. Less expensive than buying subscription.
I think NSW and NAV 2008 are less demanding on system than NSW 2006.
Hope this is of some help.
I note you said you bought NSW2008 - I assume Basic.
Your NSW2006 may have Goback - so I would install NSW2008 - let it uninstall 2006 - then use your 2006 disk to reinstall GoBack only.
My downloaded NSW2008 has goBack as an install option.
Are you sure your NSW2008 does not have goBack as an install option??

Hi Ken,
Thanks for your time in replying. I have NSW2008 Standard Edition. The hitch came in NSW2008 when the installation program saw that I had a RAID drive (Raid 1). So once the installer sees I have RAID, then the GoBack installation is greyed out.

I didn't want to buy the downloaded version because it only allows you to download the product for 30 days and costs another $10 or something like that. I like to have my disks in case I need to do a mega clean install (i.e. reformatting my hard drive) and installing everything from the beginning.

I don't really understand why I didn't have a problem installing GoBack from NSW2006 disk on my Raid 1 hard drive but with NSW2008 Standard Edition I cannot.I like the idea of going ahead an installing 2008 then reinstalling GoBack from my 2006 disk. Have you tried that?

kvoliver - thanks for your comments.
I also like having the disks - however NSW not on shelves yet in Canada, and the rebates do not seem to be as good this year.
I did not download 30 day trial version.
It is a "Free update for Norton 2007 Customers"- also works for 2006

I was able to install Ghost from NSW2003 separatly from the NSW 2008.
The trick is to open your NSW2006 disk through MY computer to get around the auto CD stuff. Find the GoBack file and open it and use the install file for GoBack.
Maybe it will install in spite of the Raid - not sure.
Worked for Ghost - so I have NSW2008, NAV2008 and Norton Ghost 2003 in separate files.
You miight even manually open your NSW 2008 disk and see if you can get to the GoBack file - and maybe it will not be greyed out.
Hopefully, at least the NSW 2006 disk opened manually will work.

Have a look at the NSW2008 files to check this out and then if you can install GoBack - then do so - then install NAV and NSW2008.

Let me know if it works.

Well, I didn't do exactly what you suggested as I wasn't sure I would know what files to look for when looking at the CD contents directly. So, I installed NSW V.11 (2008), activated my antivirus (essentially free via the rebates), then reinstalled NSW 2006 which allowed me to install GoBack. Interestingly, I had bought Norton Personal Firewall with NSW2006 as a package and when I went to re-install Norton Personal Firewall 2006, I got the message that a NSW firewall was already installed. So I guess when I uninstalled NSW 2008, the firewall remained - when I open NSW 2006, it shows an active firewall. So I got what I wanted but it was a round about way of doing it.

Incidentally, I did a live chat with Symantec - WHAT A WASTE OF TIME. On the Symantec website there is a link to a URL that states you can install GoBack at your own risk by clicking an "accept" button (I never saw an accept button when I was installing NSW2008). However, the Symantec tech support person said that Symantec will "neither recommend nor provide technical support for installing GoBack". When I asked her about the URL on their website, she rotely repeated her mantra. I asked for a supervisor and she said she was one.

Oh well, that's the end of this saga. Many thanks for your advice though!

Kathryn
